Levi Strauss & Co., the maker of Levi’s jeans and Dockers pants, Monday named Chief Operating Officer John Anderson to replace Chief Executive Phil Marineau when he retires in November.

Anderson, 55, also will take Marineau’s board seat this year, the San Francisco-based company said.

Five members of Levi’s 14-member board, including three from the founding family, stepped down last week as Levi sought a higher concentration of independent directors.

Anderson was named to his current position this month after leading Levi’s Asia-Pacific division, which performed better than the rest of the company.

Marineau last year boosted sales for the first time in nine years after introducing the Levi Strauss Signature line to be sold at discounters including Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

A former PepsiCo Inc. executive, Marineau joined Levi as CEO in 1999.
