Columnist Acquitted of Anti-Military Charges

A Turkish writer who defended a conscientious objector in her magazine column was acquitted of charges of turning people against military service.
A court in Istanbul ruled that Perihan Magden’s article amounted to “heavy criticism conveyed within the scope of freedom of expression.”
Several Turkish writers and journalists have faced trials, despite pressure from the European Union, which Turkey hopes to join, to scrap repressive laws.
