JEFF MATHIS, C

Salt Lake; triple A

After the Angels let Bengie Molina become a free agent to hand Mathis the catching job, he got off to a dreadful start with the Angels this season, batting only .103 and slugging .205 in his first 12 games. Since he was sent back to Salt Lake, he has recovered his batting stroke. Mathis is hitting .280 with a .424 slugging average. Mathis, only 23, was selected in the first round of the 2001 first-year player draft and was named the Angels’ fourth-best prospect this season by Baseball America.

REGGIE WILLITS, OF

Salt Lake; triple A

Willits was with the Angels briefly this season, playing two games without an at-bat. He is hitting .314 with a .422 on-base percentage with Salt Lake and leads the team with 14 stolen bases. Willits bunts well, can be disruptive on the bases and is an excellent fielder. As Angels Manager Mike Scioscia, on angelsbaseball.com, put it: “His whole game is built around speed.” Willits was taken in the seventh round in the 2003 draft from Oklahoma.
