60 Tons of Coal Tar Threaten Reservoir
Cleanup crews in northern China were scrambling today to absorb 60 tons of coal tar accidentally dumped in a river before it reached a reservoir serving a city of 10 million people, state media said.
The incident occurred Monday when a truck carrying the coal tar fell into the Dasha River in Shanxi province, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Officials were using absorbents to remove the tar before it reached the reservoir serving Baoding, which is about 45 miles from the site of the accident, Xinhua said.
Most of China’s canals, rivers and lakes are severely tainted by industrial, agricultural and household pollution.
