First Communications Satellite Is Launched

Kazakhstan sent its first satellite into space today, a step toward fulfilling the oil-rich ex-Soviet republic’s ambitions of joining the elite club of spaceexploring nations.
KazSat 1 is designed to provide TV transmission and communications for Kazakhstan, three other Central Asia nations -- Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan -- and parts of Russia.
