From Times Wire Reports

The wealthy Catalonia region gained sweeping new powers to run its own affairs, as voters overwhelmingly approved a charter deepening the region’s autonomy.

Some fear provisions in the new statute that allow the region to retain more of its federal tax revenue will leave Spain’s government strapped for cash.

The charter also gives the region control over infrastructure and work permits. The statute already has been approved by the national parliament.
