The Democrats’ dilemma

Re “Without Power, Democrats Lose Their Direction,” column, June 18

How can you say that the Democrats are not likely to set a decisive direction or improve their public image until they receive another chance to govern? I suggest that they will not have a chance to govern until they offer voters a platform other than holding the administration’s feet to the fire. By election day, voters will be even more impatient with the hate-Bush platform and the Democrats’ lack of vision.

Ronald Brownstein wrote a cogent article about the Democrats’ political woes, but he waited until the end to describe the one necessary ingredient for their success -- a viable leader. The Republican Party has shot itself in both feet, yet the Democrats don’t seem to be able to take advantage of the Republicans’ mistakes. As a Democrat, I’m concerned that the disarrayed Democratic Party is going to go up against the Republican juggernaut led by the likes of Karl Rove in 2008 with no viable leadership. The outcome is predictable.
