Civilians could handle Guard’s border duties

Re “Gov. Refuses Bush Request for Border Troops,” June 24

This article states that members of the National Guard would be “repairing trucks, fixing roads and operating surveillance cameras.” These tasks seem to be something that civilians easily could perform. Even in Iraq, civilians provide meal services for our troops, deliver water and fuel and even provide security for Iraqi and American officials. The president should find ways for civilian personnel to perform these border services and leave the Guard personnel at home to live their lives without interruption.
