Senate Republican and Democratic leaders resolved an impasse that has held up congressional negotiations over an overhaul of pension law.

The Senate approved a group of 16 senators who will meet with House negotiators to craft a final measure that includes new requirements for companies with underfunded pension plans and some relief for airlines that want more time to repay legacy pension costs.

Corporate backers of the legislation hope to see action before first-quarter pension payments are due April 15.
