Burke’s contribution has been enormous

Now that Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke has announced that she will not seek reelection (March 1), citizens would do well to ponder the enormous contribution that she has made to the community and to nationwide political leadership.

The fact that House and Senate races turn on substantive rather than racial issues is a direct outgrowth of Burke’s early determination and integrity.

Likewise, the fact that she has held office at the local, state and federal levels -- from the 1960s to the present day -- means that she is perceived as someone who can provide effective representation for a rapidly evolving community.

My late father was fortunate enough to serve as her press aide when she served as a member of Congress. I know that he was extremely proud of his service and commitment to this outstanding leader.

It may be some time before we see another elected official of her stature.
