Comeback for Ringaskiddy

Share

Since his win in the 2002 San Juan Capistrano, which was more indicative of the weakness of the field than his ability, Ringaskiddy has failed to win.

The Slewvescent gelding has lost nine in a row since his win in a marathon that was then a Grade I, but is now a Grade II. Now 10 years old, the California bred will return after a layoff of more than 20 months in the first race at Santa Anita.

Co-owned by trainer Juan Garcia, Ringaskiddy will return cheap this afternoon. He is one of eight scheduled to go 1 1/16 miles in the $12,500 claimer.

Agapito Delgadillo, who was aboard Send Me A Copy for Garcia on Friday when the horse was disqualified out of a victory, will ride Ringaskiddy, who has six wins in 54 career outings while earning $635,991. He has done most of his winning on the turf. He is only two for 19 on the main track.

The one to beat in the opener is Bonus Pay Day, an 8-year-old Bonus Money gelding. Owned by La Canada Stables LLC and trained by Jack Carava, he comes off a nose loss against $10,000 claimers on Feb. 19. He is also trying to end a losing streak. The California bred is 0 for 7 since the beginning of 2005.

Race of the day: Multiple, who has finished second in her first two starts in the U.S., will cut back in distance to face seven other 3-year-old fillies in the $100,000 La Habra today at Santa Anita. The race is scheduled for about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf. Multiple, an Irish-bred, is owned by a partnership and trained by Jim Cassidy and both of her wins in England came at five furlongs. The card also features the $80,000 Tapestry for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs. The 122-pound highweight is Private World, who is unbeaten in three races around one turn for Thoroughbred Capital Partners and trainer Bob Hess Jr.

One for the road: Diligent Gambler was unlucky to lose on Jan. 7 and the win type can score for the 12th time in 29 starts in today’s eighth at Aqueduct. Pablo Morales will ride the 5-year-old son of Diligence for trainer Leah Gyarmati in the $50,000 optional claimer at one mile.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Iza General in the fifth, the River Island entry, Preachintothechoir and Cut Trail in the sixth and She’s Salty, O K Topless and Miss Bobbie Quick in the seventh.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 2/151. Money: (previous day/meet total): $9.40/$917.20. Total money bet: $862.
