The president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, one of the nation’s leading Latino advocacy groups, announced her resignation Thursday.

Ann Marie Tillman, 42, an attorney formerly with Fannie Mae, has been at MALDEF for a decade, serving as its leader for two years. Her tenure has been marked by efforts to make the organization’s influence felt in political debates, such as the naming of U.S. Supreme Court justices.

MALDEF -- A brief item in Friday’s California section about the resignation of Ann Marie Tallman as president of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund incorrectly spelled her last name as Tillman.

She is leaving, a MALDEF spokeswoman said, because, “she felt it is time to do something else.”
