A night after he helped Oregon advance to the quarterfinals of the Pacific 10 Conference men’s basketball tournament with a scorching first-half shooting display, Chamberlain Oguchi saved his heroics for the second half.
Oguchi scored all 22 of his points in the last 20 minutes as seventh-seeded Oregon upset second-seeded Washington, 84-73, on Thursday night at Staples Center.
Oguchi, a sophomore, made six three-point shots as the Ducks overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to knock off the defending tournament champions.
Oregon will play California, an 82-67 winner Thursday over USC, in a semifinal tonight. The Ducks’ will be without point guard Aaron Brooks, who was ejected in the first half against Washington after committing a flagrant foul.
On Wednesday, Oguchi scored 21 of his 26 points in the first half of a victory over Washington State. He made five consecutive three-point shots and scored 15 consecutive first-half points as the Ducks advanced to the quarterfinals against a Washington team that swept them during conference play.
He missed all four of his three-point attempts in the first half against Washington, but caught fire after the break and helped Oregon improve to 15-17.
“I wasn’t concerned -- shooters keep shooting that’s my mentality,” Oguchi said. “I know all I need is one to go down. From there, I just get it going.”
Brandon Roy scored 30 points for Washington (24-6).
Oguchi’s three-pointer with just under seven minutes left put the Ducks ahead, 62-59, and his three-pointer on the Ducks’ ensuing possession pushed the lead to four points.
