A Weighty Matter for the Courts

The bread doughs of four Los Angeles bakers accused of selling underweight loaves were mixed in police court, where the men were being tried. Each was found guilty of violating a new city ordinance regulating the size of loaves and was given a $25 fine or a suspended sentence of 25 days in jail. The new ordinance required loaves to weigh 12 ounces or 24 ounces. The larger loaves produced by the four bakers in court were less than 24 ounces. The offending bread came from a Hebrew bakery at 907 E. 1st St.; a Russian bakery at 1440 E. 1st St.; a German bakery at 1706 Highland Ave.; and an American bakery at 2725 S. Central Ave., according to The Times.
