Citizens at the Mercy of Brazen Footpads

Assistant U.S. Atty. James R. Finlayson was “leisurely strolling” on Westlake Avenue between 8th and 9th streets about 8 p.m. when he “was stopped by two footpads and at the point of their revolvers relieved of an engraved gold watch and $2 in silver,” The Times reported. Under the headline “Bold Footpads,” The Times said that such robbers of pedestrians and other thieves had been busy that Sunday night, with three holdups and two burglaries reported to the police. “The footpads and professional burglars that have been operating so extensively of late in the southwestern part of the city evidently thought the quiet Sabbath evening a fit time to get in their work,” the newspaper commented.
