Moya Upsets Friend Nadal

Carlos Moya overcame a slow start to beat Rafael Nadal in a matchup of friends from Mallorca, Spain, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round of the Nasdaq-100 Open on Friday in Key Biscayne, Fla.

Moya, ranked 35th and unseeded, has provided guidance for Nadal and served as a role model during the youngster’s rise in the rankings to No. 2. The upset ended a streak of 22 consecutive wins for Nadal against his Spanish compatriots.

No. 3 Justine Henin-Hardenne was the first seeded woman to depart. Meghann Shaughnessy upset the Belgian, 7-5, 6-4. No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, a semifinalist last year, needed only 44 minutes to eliminate Samantha Stosur, 6-0, 6-0.

Johnson Signs With Panthers for $19 Million

Keyshawn Johnson signed a four-year, $19-million contract with the Carolina Panthers in a deal that includes a $5-million signing bonus.

Another former Cowboy, guard Larry Allen, agreed to a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Also, former New England Patriot tackle Tom Ashworth agreed to a $13-million, five-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks, the Patriots re-signed receiver and fan favorite Troy Brown and the Philadelphia Eagles re-signed veteran right tackle Jon Runyan.

Despite a second-half collapse that ruined a shot at the playoffs, the Atlanta Falcons gave Coach Jim Mora a three-year contract extension that runs through 2009.

New Blues Owner Vows Not to Move

The St. Louis Blues announced that owners Bill and Nancy Laurie would sell the team and the Savvis Center to Dave Checketts and his Sports Capital Partners and Towerbrook Capital Partners. The NHL Board of Governors must still approve the deal.

Checketts, whose investment firm also owns the Real Salt Lake team in Major League Soccer, said he is committed to keeping the Blues in St. Louis.

Stewart Given Pole After Rain at Bristol

Rain washed out qualifying for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn., so the field was set by owner’s points. Tony Stewart is on the pole with Greg Biffle next to him on the front row. Carl Edwards will start third, followed by Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson.

Edison Will Appeal Ineligible Player Ruling

Huntington Beach Edison is appealing the finding of a group of Sunset League principals and an investigator for the Southern Section that it used an ineligible football player in 2005.

The allegation that Edison was using a player who improperly transferred was raised before last year’s Division I playoffs, but neither the school nor the league took action. The appeal is scheduled for April 12.

Chase Budinger, a 6-foot-8 swing player from Carlsbad La Costa Canyon, and Jayne Appel, a 6-4 center from Concord Carondelet, have been selected the state boys’ and girls’ basketball players of the year by Gatorade.

Acclaimed basketball player O.J. Mayo will rejoin his team for today’s state Division III championship game in Columbus, Ohio, after he was banned from the semifinals. Cincinnati North College Hill Principal Kelly Hughes said she reinstated Mayo on Friday after he was disciplined for an undisclosed school matter.

Chivas USA Adds Defender Suarez

Longtime Mexican national team defender Claudio Suarez signed with Chivas USA, giving the MLS team help where it needs it the most. Suarez, 37, ranks second in international games played by a man with 173, six behind Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohamed Al-Deayea.

Canadian Cindy Klassen broke the 1,000-meter women’s world speedskating record, finishing in 1 minute 13.46 seconds in Calgary to beat the 1:13.83 mark set in 2002 by Chris Witty. Klassen also won the 500 meters at the Olympic Oval.

Marc Ratner, executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission since 1992, said he is resigning to take an administrative post with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The UFC recently was sanctioned in California, making it the 20th state to regulate mixed martial arts fights.

A fire swept through a wooden stable at one of New Jersey’s largest horse farms and killed all two dozen horses inside, including 12 foals less than a month old.

The fire at Perretti Farms in Upper Freehold apparently was caused when an electric line that keeps water in the wall-mounted troughs from freezing ignited a center stall about 1 a.m. Friday, State Police investigators said.

USC’s Ous Mellouli finished second in the 400-meter individual medley, and the Trojans are in seventh place at the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships in Atlanta. Arizona leads after two days, followed by Auburn and Stanford.

Former Boxer Etienne Convicted After Spree

Former heavyweight boxer Clifford Etienne has been convicted in Baton Rouge, La., of an Aug. 10 crime spree that included robbery and an attempt to shoot two police officers.

Etienne was convicted of two counts of armed robbery, attempted carjacking, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, attempted second-degree murder and two counts of attempted manslaughter.
