City to Pay Rapper’s Family for Trial Costs
The City Council voted Wednesday to pay $1.1 million in attorney fees and costs to the family of rap artist Notorious B.I.G., who was gunned down in 1997 in a case that remains unsolved.
A federal judge ordered the payment and declared a mistrial in January, after finding that a police detective had withheld evidence that could have helped the family’s civil case.

Notorious B.I.G.: An “In Brief” item in Thursday’s California section reported that the Los Angeles City Council had voted to pay the family of slain rap artist Notorious B.I.G. $1.1 million in attorney fees and costs. A judge declared a mistrial and ordered the payment as a sanction after finding that a police detective had withheld evidence that could have helped the family’s wrongful-death lawsuit. The story should have noted that the family’s suit is still proceeding, and that the city faces a retrial.
The family of the rapper, whose real name was Christopher Wallace, claimed that two former police officers were involved in his slaying.
