Don’t buy rugs made by children

Share

I was very distressed that Deborah L. Jacobs’ article [“Their Goal: Get a Great Rug and Not Get Walked All Over,” April 16] on her rug shopping trip to India did not include any concern for the laborers who made the rugs she purchased.

The finely knotted rugs Jacobs described are often made by children with fingers small enough to make such tiny knots.

Please do not buy handmade rugs without a Rugmark label to ensure that you have not contributed to slave-like conditions some of these children endure.
