The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Alessandro Carbonaro, 28, of Bethesda, Md.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Carbonaro died Wednesday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany after being severely burned May 1 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Leon B. Deraps, 19, of Jamestown, Mo.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Deraps was killed May 6 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Christopher B. Donaldson, 28, of Effingham, Ill.; chief warrant officer second class, Army. Donaldson was among 10 soldiers killed May 5 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Matthew J. Fenton, 24, of Little Ferry, N.J.; sergeant, Marine Corps Reserve. Fenton died May 6 at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., of injuries suffered April 26 when he was struck in the head by shrapnel from a roadside bomb that exploded near his vehicle in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the Inspector and Instructor Staff, 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve at Ft. Devens, Mass.

Joseph J. Fenty, 41, of Watertown, N.Y.; lieutenant colonel, Army. Fenty was among 10 soldiers killed May 5 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 71st Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Alva L. Gaylord, 25, of Carrollton, Mo.; private, Army National Guard. Gaylord was killed May 5 when a roadside bomb exploded near his mine-protected vehicle during a combat clearing operation near Qasr Ar Riyy, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 110th Engineer Battalion, Army National Guard in Kansas City, Mo.

John C. Griffith, 33, of Henderson, Nev.; sergeant, Army. Griffith was among 10 soldiers killed May 5 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Christopher T. Howick, 34, of Hamburg, N.Y.; staff sergeant, Army. Howick was among 10 soldiers killed May 5 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Dale J. Kelly Jr., 48, of Richmond, Maine; staff sergeant, Army National Guard. Kelly was one of two guardsmen killed May 6 when a man with two young children threw a bomb at their cargo truck, which was traveling in a convoy near the southern Iraqi town of Diwaniya. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry (Mountain), Army National Guard in Brewer, Maine.

Aaron P. Latimer, 26, of Ennis, Texas; specialist, Army. Latimer was found dead Tuesday in a bunker in Mosul, Iraq, northwest of Baghdad. The cause of death was under investigation. He was assigned to the 562nd Engineer Company, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

Brian M. Moquin Jr., 19, of Worcester, Mass.; private first class, Army. Moquin was among 10 soldiers killed May 5 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 71st Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Justin L. O’Donohoe, 27, of San Diego; specialist, Army. O’Donohoe was among 10 soldiers killed May 5 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 71st Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Cory L. Palmer, 21, of Seaford, Del.; corporal, Marine Corps. Palmer died May 6 while being flown from a hospital in Germany to the burn center at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio after being severely injured May 1 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Carlos N. Saenz, 46, of Las Vegas; first sergeant, Army Reserve. Saenz was among three reservists killed May 5 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 490th Civil Affairs Battalion, Army Reserve in Abilene, Texas. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was attached to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

David N. Timmons Jr., 23, of Lewisville, N.C.; specialist, Army. Timmons was among 10 soldiers killed May 5 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 71st Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Teodoro Torres, 29, of Las Vegas; specialist, Army Reserve. Torres was among three reservists killed May 5 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 490th Civil Affairs Battalion, Army Reserve in Abilene, Texas. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was attached to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Eric W. Totten, 34, of Dallas; chief warrant officer third class, Army. Totten was among 10 soldiers killed May 5 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.

Nathan J. Vacho, 29, of Janesville, Wis.; sergeant, Army Reserve. Vacho was among three reservists killed May 5 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 489th Civil Affairs Battalion in Knoxville, Tenn. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was attached to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

David M. Veverka, 25, of Jamestown, Pa.; staff sergeant, Army National Guard. Jeffery S. Wiekamp, 23, of Utopia, Texas; sergeant, Army. Wiekamp was among 10 soldiers killed May 5 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Ft. Drum, N.Y.
