* Napster Inc. of West Hollywood reported that its fiscal fourth-quarter loss narrowed as the online music service saw strong growth in subscribers. For the quarter ended March 31, Napster’s net loss was $4.4 million, or 10 cents a share, compared with $24.3 million, or 60 cents, a year earlier. Revenue rose 54% to $26.8 million.

* Children’s apparel retailer Gymboree Corp. of San Francisco said profit in the first quarter rose to $17.9 million, or 53 cents a share, from $5.3 million, or 17 cents, a year earlier. Net sales from retail operations rose 16% to $186.2 million, and same-store sales increased 13%.

* Off-price retailer Ross Stores Inc. of Pleasanton, Calif., posted first-quarter profit of $59.2 million, or 41 cents a share, up from $50.1 million, or 34 cents, a year earlier. Sales jumped 15% to $1.29 billion.
