City officials announced Wednesday that Santa Monica Police Chief James T. Butts Jr. would become the “security czar” for Los Angeles’ four airports.

Butts, 52, will be charged with managing the 1,200-member police force that patrols Los Angeles International Airport, Ontario International Airport and Van Nuys and Palmdale airports, as well as coordinating security efforts with myriad state and local law enforcement agencies.

He has been chief in Santa Monica for 15 years and formerly was deputy chief in Inglewood.
