LPGA will test for drugs in ’08

The LPGA will institute a drug-testing program in 2008, Commissioner Carolyn Bivens said Wednesday, the first such policy in professional golf.

And the PGA Tour edged closer toward possible drug testing at a meeting of the policy board in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The board agreed with Commissioner Tim Finchem’s recommendations to develop a prohibited substances list and a comprehensive outreach program to educate and inform players on health risks, the nature of testing and penalties.

The board will discuss the issue again in March.

Bivens said the LPGA would contract with the National Center for Drug Free Sport to develop the program during the 2007 season and have it in place for 2008.

“While the LPGA has had no evidence to date of performance-enhancing drug use by our players, we recognize the concerns regarding drug use in sport and the need to have a clear policy and program in place,” Bivens said at the season-ending ADT Championship at West Palm Beach, Fla.
