Coverage wins praise amid corporate turmoil

Regarding “Times editor is out after fighting cuts,” Nov. 8:

How did the staff do it? With the turmoil caused by the Tribune’s firing of Editor Dean Baquet, somehow The Times’ post-election coverage -- local, state, national -- was amazing in its fullness.

The assessment by former Editor John S. Carroll that “there is a steely determination in Chicago to reduce The Times to mediocrity” makes this coverage all the more splendid.

I thank Managing Editor Leo C. Wolinsky for thinking of The Times as a public trust. It is. A public trust and a first-class newspaper.

Please do not listen to the readers who complained that stories on the South Korean film industry, life in the Philippines and a gay couple’s struggles to create a child were of no interest to them (Letters, Nov. 12).

I read the paper daily for its coverage of local and national issues and for stories about people who live far different lives from my own. To me, these stories are what makes The Times a great newspaper.

First we read three installments about Chad and David Craig and their designer babies, for which they paid more than $100,000. Then we read about Lucinda and Kemry Hughes and “procreation” vacations (“Making a baby on a family getaway,” Nov. 7).

Is it any wonder that the Third World despises us? How much more help could we give, if we had our priorities in order?
