Kids doing a cop’s job in Iraq

Re “Sleuths in body armor,” a four-part series, Nov. 14-17

Your series about our troops combating crime in Iraq demonstrates our administration’s ineptitude. They are using boys and girls who are just a few years out of high school (and an ex-pizza man!) to investigate what amounts to gang crime.

The best-qualified person, a West Point graduate, is a trained soldier, not a detective. They are using eminently unqualified people to do a job that would challenge even the most professional of police forces, as is proved every day here in Los Angeles.

The Americans should be working with the Iraqi authorities to support them and to be sure they are proceeding in a correct manner. Instead, they seem to be allowing the police to operate without oversight. This shows how far we are from creating peace in Iraq, and it is not the troops’ fault.
