Jackson won’t direct ‘Hobbit’
Peter Jackson won’t be working his cinematic magic on “The Hobbit,” J.R.R. Tolkien’s predecessor to “The Lord of the Rings.”
The Oscar-winning filmmaker sent word over the weekend to the Internet fan site TheOneRing.net that he was off the project because he was suing New Line Cinema over proceeds from his blockbuster movie trilogy. Jackson said he and Fran Walsh, his wife and filmmaking partner, “have no choice but to let the idea of a film of ‘The Hobbit’ go and move forward with other projects.”
Jackson said New Line told his representatives that the studio was under time pressure to move forward, and that it was seeking another filmmaker.
New Line, which has the right to produce the film but not distribute it, had no comment.
