Cheroot leads all the way for victory in On Trust
Cheroot enjoyed his first experience over the Cushion track at Hollywood Park, leading throughout to win the $100,000 On Trust Handicap on Thursday.
Owned by breeder Charlotte Wrather and trained by Darrell Vienna, the 5-year-old Smokester horse won for the sixth time in 23 starts, completing the 7 1/2 furlongs in 1:28.96 under jockey Martin Pedroza.
El Don finished second, one length behind Cheroot, and Old Man River was third. Areyoutalkintome, the 8-5 favorite, was fourth in a field reduced to seven after Armenian Summer, Brooker, King Mobay and Seven Nation Army were scratched.

In other stakes races around the country, favored Afrashad led throughout to win the $100,000 Fall Highweight Handicap over a sloppy track at Aqueduct. Also, Ermine, a 7-2 shot, won the $300,000 Falls City Handicap at Churchill Downs, and Cort’s P.B., a 13-1 shot, won the $75,000 Thanksgiving Handicap at the Fair Grounds.

Jockey Russell Baze won once Thursday at Bay Meadows, so his career total is now 9,524, leaving him six shy of tying Laffit Pincay Jr. on the all-time list.
