Making a name

I read Diane Haithman’s “ ‘The New Chelsea’ in Our Backyard” [Sept. 17] and just wanted it known that -- unless proven otherwise -- I believe I was the first person on record to make the connection between the Culver City art gallery district and New York’s Chelsea. In both February and September of 2003, respectively.

While writing gallery roundup stories for Artnet’s online magazine, I broke the news of Blum & Poe’s impending move to Culver City from Santa Monica and subsequently their grand Culver City opening, in which I dubbed the budding art scene there as the L.A. equivalent of Chelsea.

While being the first person to conjure up this comparison is a relatively unimportant distinction -- and not particularly clever -- let the history books show it was (probably) me.
