CNN unveils a video ‘news wall’

CNN is giving news a bigger picture -- or rather, lots of pictures and graphics arrayed across the network’s sprawling new video wall.

Amping up the style of presentation ushered in a year ago with “The Situation Room,” the network’s Washington-based newscast anchored by Wolf Blitzer, CNN unveiled its Manhattan “news wall” on Tuesday’s editions of “Paula Zahn Now” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”

Along with those programs, the newly equipped studio at CNN’s Time Warner Center headquarters will also be the home of “American Morning” starting Monday.

Dominating one area of the studio is a screen that measures 24 feet long and 9 feet high -- almost twice the dimensions of the “Situation Room” video wall.

CNN President Jonathan Klein said it was important to get the facility up and running well before the midterm elections next month, when the video wall will be a centerpiece of CNN’s election-night coverage.

But was its introduction also timed to steal a little thunder from Fox News Channel’s 10th anniversary this week?

“I wish we were that smart,” Klein said with a laugh. “This has been in the works for more than a year.”
