Keeneland Debuts Its New Track

Share

Keeneland will have a new look when it begins its 17-day fall meet today in Lexington, Ky.

A renovation of the track has widened the turns and the surface is now synthetic, Polytrack having been installed.

Two graded stakes are being run -- the $150,000 Sycamore Breeders’ Cup at 1 1/2 miles on the turf and the $400,000 Alcibiades at 1 1/16 miles.

A Grade II for 2-year-old fillies, the Alcibiades drew an overflow field of 14, including California shippers She’s Included and Untouched Talent.

Trained by Jeff Bonde, Untouched Talent, a daughter of Storm Cat, has won two of three, but this will be her first start beyond seven furlongs. She won the Sorrento, a Grade III, at Del Mar before suffering her first loss when she ran second to Point Ashley in the Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 4.

A daughter of Include owned by Charles Cono and trained by Chris Paasch, She’s Included has one win in three starts. She finished third, a nose behind Untouched Talent, in the Debutante.

Race of the day: Backus, who has won two in a row after losing his first seven starts, is one of six scheduled to run seven furlongs in the seventh race today at Santa Anita. Aaron Gryder will ride the 4-year-old Real Quiet gelding for trainer Bob Baffert in the $44,000 optional claimer.

One for the road: Rosie’s Attitude is a first-time starter in a bad race going for a trainer who does well with new shooters in the ninth at Belmont Park. Cornelio Velasquez will ride the 2-year-old Aptitude filly for trainer Tom Bush in the $42,000 maiden contest for New York-breds at 1 1/16 miles on turf. The race is the final leg of a pick six with a hefty carry-over of $456,860.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Miz Paradis in the fifth, Celtic Fable and Ferndale Sal in the sixth and Paddy Murphy and Sunshine Alpine in the seventh.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 4/27. Money: (previous day/meet total): $23.60/$131.80. Total money bet: $120.
