From Times Staff Reports

The City Council tightened rules Friday on renting motel rooms in an attempt to discourage prostitution and other crimes.

Under the new rules, no one can rent a room for fewer than 12 hours without proper identification. In addition, people checking into rooms are required to give their real names.

The rules also require motel and hotel owners to keep detailed registries of their guests and to keep those records for three months. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor.
