Turks and Armenians
Re “Nobelist’s Voice Goes Beyond His Books,” Oct. 13
Orhan Pamuk’s winning of the Nobel Prize for literature brings Turkey’s Armenian controversy to the forefront once again, in a very public way. Here is a golden opportunity for Turkey, a democratic and secular country, to confront its past. Turkish authorities should recognize that this is an issue that requires open discussion and then deal with it. Such a discussion would not insult “Turkishness” but rather elevate opinion of Turkey. It is the mature and right thing to do. Its time has come.
