South Korea’s foreign minister was scheduled to begin a two-day visit to China today, during which he is to meet with President Hu Jintao, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing.

The visit is part of Ban Ki-moon’s tour of the five permanent member countries of the U.N. Security Council after his election this month as the next U.N. secretary-general, but his discussions in Beijing will also cover the North Korean nuclear issue, his ministry said.

Ban plans to visit Russia and France next week.

His trip to Beijing comes a week after Tang, in his capacity as a Chinese presidential envoy, met North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang, the North’s capital, for talks on the nuclear issue.
