Iran has started enriching uranium in a second network of centrifuges, the Iranian Student News Agency reported Friday.

Diplomats said this week that the centrifuges had been started but that Iran appeared only to be testing them, without enriching any uranium gas.

But ISNA quoted an “informed source” as saying “the injection of gas was carried out” in the last week and that “we have obtained the product.”

Enrichment can yield fuel for power plants or, possibly, material for atomic bombs.

Iran says its program aims to meet energy needs. But the West fears that the efforts are aimed at weapons production.
