9/11 families need support

Re “WTC find rekindles debate over remains,” Oct. 26

For those family members left without even a body to bury, the World Trade Center site represents the last place where their loved ones were seen alive.

Now that human remains continue to be discovered at the site, all construction work must cease so that specially trained personnel from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command can assist in locating and identifying the additional remains at the site and the surrounding environs.

Why the Gettysburg battlefield is designated a national park while the former World Trade Center site remains a gaping hole in the ground, and ashes containing human remains lie in a garbage dump ironically named Fresh Kills, is beyond my comprehension.

Our political leaders are not alone in abandoning the needs of the 9/11 families. Although the religious community rushed to ground zero in droves after the towers fell, these same clergy seem to be silent now in assisting the families with this pressing pastoral issue. I implore the politicians and religious leaders to side with the families during their time of need.
