One in every 825 California households reported foreclosure activity in September, compared to one in every 1,030 households nationally, according to RealtyTrac Inc., an Irvine-based company that monitors such data.

Foreclosure activity -- ranging from default notices issued by the lender when the mortgage payment is more than a month late to the loss of houses -- rose 74% in L.A. County in September, an increase for the fourth straight month, to 3,675 properties. That’s one new foreclosure filing for every 890 households.

Riverside County outpaced every other county in the state in foreclosure activity, with one new foreclosure for every 330 households. San Bernardino County ranked second with one filing for every 339.
