2008 Trial Expected in Airliner Case
Eight British Muslims charged in an alleged plot to blow up U.S.-bound aircraft heard Monday that they were unlikely to be brought to trial until 2008.
None of the eight applied for bail during a brief hearing at the Central Criminal Court, and they were ordered to be returned to custody.
Prosecutor Colin Gibbs told the court that there would be no trial before January 2008, and that it would most likely occur around Easter -- which falls on March 23 that year.
The men, who are aged from 19 to 28, appeared at London’s Old Bailey court via video link from the Belmarsh maximum-security prison in southeast London.
They are charged with conspiracy to murder and plotting to smuggle and detonate bombs aboard airliners.
The men were among 25 people arrested by British anti-terrorism detectives.
Authorities said Aug. 10 that they had foiled a plan to use liquid explosives to bring down several planes in midair across the Atlantic.
