Couric is a host, not a journalist

When one thinks of the distinguished, intellectual, news-oriented giants who have graced us with their presence over the years, individuals such as Walter Cronkite, Bob Schieffer, Mike Wallace, Eric Sevareid, Diane Sawyer and Edward R. Murrow come to mind, to name a few [“Schieffer Ends Anchor Stint,” by Matea Gold, Aug. 31].

Katie Couric is nowhere on that list nor is she likely ever to be, as she has none of the characteristics of those who made a name for themselves in the glory days of news and public affairs. She has made a name for herself by virtue of being a sparkling, bubbly, smiling hostess, not a substantive, serious newsperson.

CBS News, through its coronation of Couric, has turned away from news and toward absurdity.
