Steve Irwin memorialized
The family and friends of “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin said farewell with an intimate gathering and stories around a campfire on the grounds of Australia Zoo, the wildlife park he turned into a top tourist attraction.
On Monday, one week after his death by a stingray, Australia Zoo’s general manager, Wes Mannion, said that a private memorial service was held on Saturday, attended by Irwin’s family; relatives of his American wife, Terri; and close friends.
“Because Steve loved the bush so much and yarning around the campfire, the service was held just like he would have wanted, with everyone telling their favorite stories about him around a candlelit fire,” said Bob Irwin, Steve’s father.
A public memorial service is set for next Tuesday or Wednesday, probably at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. (Animal Planet will showcase Irwin’s best TV moments and a tribute. See Page 9.)
