Singer Houston files for divorce

One-time pop superstar Whitney Houston has filed for divorce from faded R&B; phenom Bobby Brown, ending a famously volatile marriage that inspired relentless tabloid coverage and a short-lived TV reality series.

“She has filed for divorce,” Nancy Seltzer, the singer’s publicist, confirmed Wednesday. Seltzer said Brown was served with the papers on Tuesday.

The couple has had a stormy marriage, and Brown has had frequent brushes with the law, including a 2003 domestic abuse charge in which he allegedly struck Houston in the face and threatened to beat her.

Houston and Brown married in 1992 and have a 13-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina. Last year, the couple starred in a 10-part reality series called “Being Bobby Brown” that aired on the Bravo cable channel.

Houston has been dogged by reports questioning her health and alleged drug use. Sources say she is now getting well and planning a new album.
