Mayor, Chief Endorse Driver’s License Bill
- Share via
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Police Chief William J. Bratton on Thursday endorsed a proposed state law that would give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, though the licenses could not be used for general identification.
They appeared with the bill’s sponsor, state Sen. Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles). Bratton said the much-revised bill meets public safety standards.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to veto it, however. He repealed a version after his election in 2003 and has vetoed two variations since then.
