Tunes that go to the next level

Share

Talk to any early ‘80s baby (or thereabouts) and they can hum the Super Mario Bros. theme song note for note, even the part where Mario slips down the chimney and punches at bricks for points. Japanese composer Koji Kondo is responsible for that primitive techno hit, as well as the Legend of Zelda theme, both of which will be performed at the conceptually ingenious and fantastically dorky concert, Video Games Live. Featuring the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra led by Video Games Live cocreator and conductor Jack Wall, game tunes will morph from blips and beeps to full, swelling compositions, accompanied by video footage, synchronized lighting and interactive segments.

Video Games Live, Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N. Highland Ave., Hollywood. Pre-show festival and costume contest, 5:30 tonight; show, 8 p.m. $3 to $65. (213) 480-3232.
