Italian Nun Slain in Somalia Is Laid to Rest
Hundreds of mourners bid a final farewell to an elderly Italian nun shot dead in Somalia, and her fellow sisters vowed not to abandon their humanitarian work despite the dangers.
“We know the risks, but we will go back soon to continue our work,” Sister Gianna Irene Peano said at a Roman Catholic church in Nairobi, Kenya.
Leonella Sgorbati, 64, was gunned down Sunday at a Mogadishu children’s hospital. There was some speculation that her death might have been a result of anger at Pope Benedict XVI’s remarks on Islam.
