From Times Staff Reports

The number of domestic violence cases handled by the Police Department has steadily declined during the last decade, from 28,227 in 1996 to 17,252 last year, the agency reported Tuesday.

The trend is continuing this year, with 8,082 cases reported during the first six months, police officials said.

Police Cmdr. Harlan Ward told the Police Commission that collaboration with community groups and sending counselors to the scenes of calls has helped the department reduce the problem.
