Fletchers Cove Returns Today to Track Where She Has Sparkled

Share

At racetracks not named Santa Anita, Fletchers Cove is winless in six starts.

Luckily for the 3-year-old Flame Thrower filly, the Oak Tree meet began two days ago, so she’ll get an opportunity to run at her favorite place today.

Owned by breeder Gary Garber and trained by Bob Baffert, Fletchers Cove has won two of five in Arcadia.

In the seventh race, she is the only one of five horses with more than one win at Santa Anita.

The Florida-bred broke her maiden on Dec. 26, then won a $62,500 claimer by a length as the 7-10 favorite on April 20.

Tyler Baze, who was aboard for both of those victories, has the mount again today in the $42,000 optional claimer at six furlongs.

Opposition will be provided by Tucker’s Tune, Run For Dessert, Sugar Doll and Runaway Cozzene.

A 3-year-old Runaway Groom filly co-owned by trainer Moon Han, Runaway Cozzene will be making her first start since she finished second to Harriett Lane on the grass Feb. 4. Previously, Runaway Cozzene had beaten $100,000 maiden claimers by a nose at nearly 19-1 in her debut on Jan. 13.

Jon Court will ride and she will break from the outside.

Race of the day: Successful Ways, a winner in his debut on a muddy track Aug. 30 at Saratoga, will try to show what he can do on dry land in the eighth race today at Belmont Park. Fernando Jara will ride the 2-year-old Successful Appeal colt for George Steinbrenner’s Kinsman Stable and trainer Nick Zito in the $45,000 optional claimer at six furlongs.

Superstar Lebo, Cash Rich, Sipsey and King Barney complete the field.

One for the road: Volcanoa gets his best chance yet to graduate in the eighth race today at Hawthorne. Jesse Campbell will ride the 3-year-old Devil’s Bag colt for owner-breeders Guy and Diane Snowden and trainer Michael Stidham in the $28,000 maiden race at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.
