Checks, balances and LAPD pay
Re “8 LAPD patrol officers’ pay tops $200,000 a year,” March 31
The article on police overtime makes it appear as if the officers didn’t earn it. However, it clearly describes the hardest-working police officers in the city. More hours equals more pay. Duh!

This story certainly calls for a review of Los Angeles Police Department management practices. The salaries themselves are blatant examples of senior police officials’ inability to deal with cost controls. Worse yet, and not addressed in your article, are the hidden costs of retirement benefits. It is my understanding that total salaries, including overtime, are used to calculate police retirement benefits. If this is correct, then undefined costs are being shifted to citizens. No wonder California finances are in such terrible shape.
