State to seek curbs on doctor’s license
State officials will move to restrict the ability of a Northern California child psychiatrist to practice medicine after his arrest on molestation charges.
Dr. William Ayres, 75, of San Mateo is expected to appear in court Wednesday for arraignment. At the hearing, a deputy attorney general representing the Medical Board of California will ask the judge to issue a “no-practice” order that would temporarily block Ayres from practicing medicine, said Medical Board spokeswoman Candis Cohen. If that fails, the state will seek to prohibit Ayres from treating male patients, she said. “This case is of extreme concern to us,” Cohen said.
Ayres, a past president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, was charged last week with 14 counts of lewd and lascivious acts on three children under age 14.
