Fining uninsured is a bad idea

Re “Proposal: Get health insurance or pay fine,” April 11

So, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposes that I be forced to pay for health insurance or be fined. I will be glad to comply when Sacramento makes a concerted effort to mitigate the incredible waste in our healthcare system.

The governor can start by investigating the outrageous profits of health insurance companies. Add to that redundant broker and consulting fees, unnecessary medical tests that line doctors’ pockets and a lack of emphasis on preventive and coordinated patient care, and you have a system that does little to promote the health of the typical Californian.

Looking at just one side of the healthcare equation -- namely who is going to pay for it -- is disingenuous. It is time to repair a system that is badly in need of fixing.

Schwarzenegger’s plan to fine those who cannot afford health insurance is a sellout to insurance companies, the source of his money and recipient of his favors. His plan pinches the poor and tickles the rich.

The only way low-income Californians will be able to afford health insurance is to get high overhead insurance companies out of healthcare and institute a plan that works, like Medicare.

How is Schwarzenegger going to mandate health insurance when California can’t keep uninsured motorists off its roads?
