Weaver is scheduled to make start Monday

Jered Weaver, on the disabled list because of shoulder tightness, will join the Angels in Boston today and is scheduled to make his 2007 debut Monday.

Angels Manager Mike Scioscia had Weaver “penciled in” for Monday, but not until Weaver threw 92 pitches on Wednesday over seven shutout innings, giving up three hits and striking out seven, in a rehabilitation start for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga did the right-hander solidify the spot.

Asked if Weaver’s name had gone from pencil to ink for Monday, Scioscia said, “Unless he shows up in a sling.”

The right-hander’s pitch count was a determining factor, “but so was the stamina of getting up and down seven times,” Scioscia said of Weaver, who went 11-2 with a 2.56 earned-run average as a rookie last season. “His start before, he threw 77 pitches in four innings. At some point, you have to get deeper into the game.”

Scioscia said left-hander Joe Saunders would remain in the rotation and start Tuesday in Oakland, meaning Dustin Moseley, who has allowed two earned runs in 12 innings of his two starts, including Thursday’s no-decision against Cleveland, would probably be demoted to triple-A Salt Lake.

Scioscia said “there’s a chance we’ll keep an extra pitcher around” until Weaver and Bartolo Colon gain more stamina, so Moseley or Saunders could remain with the Angels for an extra week or two, with reserve outfielder Tommy Murphy going to Salt Lake.

It appears the nasty weather the Angels encountered in Milwaukee will follow them to Boston, where the forecast for a four-game series calls for temperatures in the low 40s with a 60% chance of rain Sunday and a 70% chance of rain Monday. High winds are forecast for the weekend.

“Can we stay here and play?” reliever Scot Shields said of Milwaukee’s Miller Park.

“I’m all for it,” pitcher John Lackey said.

Boston’s game against Seattle Thursday was rained out. Unlike Miller Park, Fenway does not have a roof.

“I’m from the Caribbean -- that’s no fair,” said Kelvim Escobar, the Venezuelan right-hander who is scheduled to pitch Saturday. “It’s hard to get a feel for the ball on your pitches in weather like that, but it’s probably harder for position players, because they’re standing around. When you’re pitching, you’re doing something all the time.”

Traveling secretary Tom Taylor made Scioscia eat his words. Informed before Thursday’s game that Taylor and media relations assistant Eric Kay would be running in Miller Park’s traditional Sausage Race, Scioscia listed Kay as his favorite.

“E.K. all the way,” Scioscia said. “If Tom Taylor even finishes on his feet, it will be a monumental achievement.”

Not only did Taylor, running in the Hotdog suit, beat out Kay in his Bratwurst suit, the traveling secretary won the race, finishing ahead of the Italian Sausage, the Polish Sausage and the Chorizo, as well. Kay finished second.
