Program to give schools more say
From Times Wire Reports
Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons and Senate Democrats have reached a compromise over an “empowerment” program that allows schools to decide what needs funding the most.
The compromise allows as many as 5% of schools in Clark and Washoe counties to become empowerment schools, with a maximum of 100 statewide. It allows charter schools and rural school districts to apply for empowerment programs as well.
The program would give school principals control over nearly all of a school’s budget.
