LAX baggage system project contract awarded

From Times Staff Reports

The city’s Airport Commission voted on Monday to award a $192-million contract to Swinerton Builders to overhaul baggage systems in three terminals on Los Angeles International Airport’s north side.

The contractor will remove truck-sized explosives-detection machines from terminal lobbies and place them in bag systems that ferry luggage from ticket counters to waiting airplanes.

Officials hope the project will free up scarce space in lobbies and help ease lines that experts say are an attractive target for terrorists. The baggage system overhaul is part of a plan to rework all conveyors in nine terminals at LAX and two terminals at LA/Ontario International Airport.

The overall project has experienced long delays and is expected to cost about 2 1/2 times initial estimates.
